Kathy Longley
Magazine editor (Fibromyalgia Focus)
Bath
I first got involved with FMA UK in 1997 when the previous chair, Bob Stewart, kindly allowed me to have a go at writing some science articles for the Fibromyalgia Magazine. I had just graduated with a degree in biology from Bath University and was keen to do something with what I had learnt, as I was not well enough to pursue a career having just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
Bob and Pam were extremely kind to me, giving me lots of encouragement and support and I soon found myself involved with the Medical Advisory Board and running the local support group in Bath. I was then invited onto the board of trustees where I served for about three years.
About four years ago I decided I wanted to attempt a career in health writing, so with many anxieties and trepidations, I became self-employed and took on the role of editor for the FMA UK section of FaMily Magazine. In addition, I now write medical abstracts, tutor A-level biology, dabble in a bit of disabled travel writing and coordinate a Christian singles group in the Bath and Bristol area. It can be a real struggle with all the pain and fatigue of FM, but I love the fulfilment I gain and try to pace myself as best I can.
My favourite activities are going for long walks in the countryside with the aid of my cross-country wheelchair, Portia, travelling abroad when ever the opportunity arises, listening to trashy novels while I have my afternoon rest and being involved with my church family in Bath.
