Blackburn GroupWhy do people with FM complain of fibrofog, but perform well in cognitive tests? This apparent puzzle has caught the interest of researchers Dr Frank Leavitt PhD, from the department of psychology and Dr Robert Katz M.D, from the department of rheumatology of Rush Medical College, Chicago, Illinois, who have carried out some revealing research into FM and cognitive dysfunction. To discover what they have found check out August’s mag.

Also Linda Horncastle shares her personal experience with the treatment, Alpha-Stim 100, a device that uses microcurrent therapy to naturally and safely stimulate cell repair.

With best wishes,

fm on the plinthFibromyalgia has a slot on the Trafalgar Plinth on Wednesday 19th August. Helen Butcher applied and was very surprised to get the opportunity to take part. For the 2400 places there has been over 31,000 applicants. Helen plans to "create 'A Statue's Eye View', a photographic gallery of an hour in the life of a statue -to raise awareness of Fibromyalgia."

Helen will take to the plinth between 5 and 6 pm, which should mean that there are a lot of people to see her. There is also a Justgiving page on which you can donate, and her webpage has some more information.

Disability benefits at threat! Act quickly to make your voice heard

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

ImageThe information below has been received from Benefits and Works website. Please read it and sign on the website below. There are now over 5000 signatures but please don’t stop from signing up, and in addition if you could contact your MP and voice your concern to them.

Claimants have less than 100 days to prevent their DLA and AA being abolished. A government green paper, entitled 'Shaping the future of care together' has revealed proposals to stop paying ‘disability benefits, for example, attendance allowance’’ and hand the cash over to social services instead. Under the plan, current claimants would have their disability benefits converted to a ‘personal budget’ administered by local authorities and used to pay for services – not to spend as they wish.

Once the green paper consultation period ends, if an almighty row has not been raised, it is likely that both major political parties will see the lack of outrage as a green light to end both DLA and AA. The aim was a minimum of 1,000 (this has already been passed in the first 24 hours but please don't stop), claimants, carers and support workers to join our campaign to save these benefits from being abolished.

Find out how you can take part from this page on the Benefits and Works website.

Northern Ireland Conference

Dr. Patrick Wood MD and Kim LawsonI am writing this from a hotel in Coleraine and thinking back to the conference that was held here on Saturday. There was a tremendous turnout of over 240 people and its a quick visual reminder to anyone that has difficulty in believing in fibromyalgia. The conferences speakers ranged in topics from personal experience of fibromyalgia, a different method of looking at fibromyalgia, the latest pharmacological Dr. Chris Idzikowskiapproaches and medical evidence as well as recognising and dealing with depression.

FMA UK's Medical Advisory Board member Kim Lawson presented an interesting view of fibromyalgia that encouraged the separation of the symptomatic elements of fibromyalgia from the underlying condition itself. He also expressed a need to not only categorise fibromyalgia in terms of its pain but also give more weight to the other symptoms. He used the analogy that we do not describe diabetes in terms of its symptoms so why should we do this with fibromyalgia.
