Champion FundraiserAre antidepressants really any good at treating fibromyalgia?  This is the question we home in on this month as we look at some of the latest research studies, get opinions from expert medical advisory board member, Dr Kim Lawson, and ask various people with fibromyalgia about their own experiences with the different types of available antidepressants..

It is also that time of year again when we get to put forward the names of the people in the FM community who have impressed us with their dedication and support of others for the FMA UK volunteer awards.

With best wishes,
Kathy Longley (FMA UK Editor)

The FM Community Fights Back
The US agency, Associated Press, recently published an article entitled "Fibromyalgia: disease or marketing ploy?".  In this article fibromyalgia was referred to as a 'murky illness' which is being exploited by drug companies to make money.  The drug companies are also criticised for giving large grants to fibromyalgia charities, like the US National Fibromyalgia Association, to support educational programmes and medical conferences.  The critics claim that the overall objective of these grants is to draw attention to the new drugs they are producing in an attempt to influence both doctors and patients.  The article throws doubt on the legitimacy of fibromyalgia and whether non-profit organisations are being exploited by drug company grants. FMA UK and the US National Fibromyalgia Association have both responded to Associated Press with the following comments...

International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day May 12th

This is the day we can at least get the word fibromyalgia to as many people as possible. To start with the easiest, don't have to leave the comfort of my own home methods, what about a call to your favourite radio station asking for a request to all those with fibromyalgia.  It could be something soothing and relaxing to help chill out those in pain or something lively...

Are Antidepressants Any Good at Treating Fibromyalgia? By Kathy Longley

Low doses of antidepressants have been the cornerstone of fibromyalgia treatment for many years.  They are prescribed to reduce pain and fatigue levels and improve sleep, but do they actually work?  The scientific journal, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), recently published a paper which looked at 18 randomized control trials that have investigated the use of antidepressants in treating fibromyalgia and concluded that there is strong evidence that these drugs can reduce pain,...

Isle Of Wight FM Support Group by Val Garrett
I have been running this group for 6 years. It started a year after I was diagnosed with fibro. As I had never heard of it I went on the net and found Fibromyalgia UK and they could not have been more helpful. They said that although there was not a support group on the Isle of Wight, would I be prepared to set one up? I must say it was hard work...

What Winning the National Award Meant to Me by Sue Strafford-Binks
Winning Volunteer of the Year for the Northwest region for two years running was fantastic but winning the National Volunteer of the Year Award was a huge honour after 18 years of voluntary working it made all the hard hours worthwhile. I wanted to use the award to have more impact in raising awareness after all if I couldn't do it this year when could I do it! I wrote to all 101 MP's in my region and sent official…

Please sign petition for Interstitial Cystitis by Anne Yarham
Will you consider signing a government on line petition with regard to asking for more recognition and research into the debilitating bladder condition of Interstitial Cystitis (IC)? Many sufferers of Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome/Inflammatory Bladder also suffer from fibromyalgia and other conditions like IBS/auto-immune diseases. Gaining recognition and early diagnosis of IC is incredibly difficult and in the same...
